GENERAL PURPOSE:The Senior Mental Health Therapist functions as a primary therapist providing behavioral health assessment, treatment planning, and treatment for patients with mental health diagnoses and their families. They also provide crisis and risk management interventions, collaborate with collateral contacts, and coordinate linkages to necessary community resources. The Senior MHT participates on one or more multidisciplinary treatment teams. They provide clinical supervision to staff clinicians and trainees and/or provide leadership and coordination for significant components of the service.RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides direct evidence-informed clinical treatment to assigned patients, including individual, group, and family therapy; as well as crisis intervention. Assesses successful completion of therapeutic goals (i.e., progress monitoring) and plans patient discharge accordingly. Meets minimum target for clinical productivity set by service director.

Under general direction and with considerable latitude for independent judgment performs complex psychosocial assessments and diagnostic formulations for patients and their families.

Documents treatment in patients’ electronic medical record in compliance with Program, Department and Hospital regulations. This includes the development of family centered, comprehensive and individualized treatment plans for patients with clearly defined therapeutic goals with patients and families.

Provides supervision to staff clinicians and trainees. Shares responsibility for the quality of care being provided by the supervisee (e.g., shares knowledge of evidence-based assessment and interventions, community resources, models ethical behavior and standards, provides regular feedback on strengths and areas for growth, communicates with other members of the supervisory team). Supervisors provide oversight to ensure that supervisees meet service

standards (e.g., clinical productivity and timely completion of high-quality documentation).

Collaborates with referral sources and other professionals both internal and external throughout patient care activities (e.g., PCPs). Mobilizes family and natural support networks when clinically indicated.

Establishes and regularly maintains cooperative working relationships with community and health care agencies, as well as professional and administrative staff of the Medical Center and University. Coordinates with support staff regarding patient scheduling, fees, and insurance issues.

Maintains professional CEU requirements by reading, attending seminars, workshops and conferences.

Other duties as assigned (e.g., clinical and administrative leadership of a service component such as Group Therapy Program, Crisis Services Program).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree from a program in a mental health field that is accredited by the Counsel for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), the American Art Therapy Association, the Commission on Accreditation of Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), or another acceptable accrediting agency as determined by the NY State Office of Professions to be the substantial equivalent of such a registered or accredited program required.

2-3 years’ experience working with children and adolescents with behavioral health disorders required.

Supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge, skills and abilities to provide mental health services to children and families required.

NYS licensure as a mental health practitioner (e.g., Mental Health Counselor, Creative Arts Therapist) required.
