We are searching for a Design and Analysis Department Head to join our Materials Design and Optimization Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.You will:Lead a group of engineers, scientists, and support staff that are engaged in the development of computational models and performance predictions for advanced material systems such as polymer, ceramic/ metal matrix composites, ceramics, and metallicsLead the development of proposals and projects that further our knowledge of computational modeling and analysisProvide project updates to sponsors, present research findings at conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journalsCollaborate with engineers in other technical areas across ARLPlan, staff, and execute programs to ensure all departmental staff and faculty are appropriately and sufficiently tasked at all timesRecruit, retain, and define performance expectations of department staff and facultyIdentify professional development and training opportunitiesMentor and encourage creativity in innovative technologies and researchEvaluate professional growth through performance reviewsFaculty rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelors' Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, plus 5 years of related experience.Required skills/experience areas include:All aspects of computational design and analysis as mentioned above; including expertise in CAD and FEA methods and commercial applicationsDemonstrated success leading a team of engineers/scientistsPrevious success with collaborations in a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented cultureProposal and technical writing skillsPreferred skills/experience areas include:Active government security clearanceYour working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.ARL at Penn State is an integral part of one of the leading research universities in the nation and serves as a University center of excellence in defense science, systems, and technologies with a focus in naval missions and related areas.You will be subject to a government security investigation, and you must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
