This individual will lead the editorial team and serve as the lead for all digital newsletters, flagship publications, and two print publications. This role is central to SHRM's mission to create better workplaces and a better world by shifting narratives around HR, business leadership, and societal issues.Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategy:

Lead the editorial team in determining the look, feel, and content of all publications.

Develop and execute a content strategy that aligns with SHRM’s goals and audience-centric approach.

Content Strategy, Creation, and Distribution:

Oversee a team of content creators to produce engaging content for various channels and publications.

Develop editorial plans and calendars.

Lead the distribution of content across multiple platforms and formats.

Analyze content performance to measure success.

Setting the Tone & Understanding the Audiences:

Establish the voice of SHRM’s publications and set the tone for the newsroom under the direction of the Marketing and Brand leadership.

Understand the needs, wants, and behaviors of primary audiences and sub-segments.

Adherence to Editorial Policies & Standards:

Ensure that all publications adhere to SHRM's editorial policies, including those related to AI and Gen AI usage.

Set content standards and issue SOPs to guide the team.

Ensure content is journalistically objective and fact-checked for spelling, grammar, style, design, and photos.

Maintain brand consistency across all content and collaborate with other departments, such as marketing, corporate communications, brand, Knowledge Advisors, and customer experience.

Representing the Publications:

Serve as a representative for all SHRM digital and print publications.

Handle reader ideas and complaints and take responsibility for issues after publication.

Write editorial pieces or columns from SHRM’s viewpoint as needed.

Education & Experience RequirementsEducation & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field; master's degree preferred

10 years of work-related experience with 5 years of experience in content leadership, preferably within business consulting or trade associations.

Proven success leading editorial teams and managing publication processes.

Demonstrated experience in content strategy.

Proven leadership and team management skills with experience in guiding teams to achieve strategic objectives, the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, and a talent for aligning departmental efforts with company-wide goals.

Strong ability to apply audience insights to content plans and development.

Excellent writing, editing, and project management skills.

Proficiency in digital publishing tools and content management systems.

Strong analytical skills and ability to use data to drive decisions.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong understanding of content marketing strategies, market segmentation, and the ability to execute content projects from conception through execution. 

Strong understanding of content operations, content management systems (CMS), SEO, social media platforms, digital marketing tools, and analytics platforms. Expert knowledge of Marketo and Adobe Experience Manager a plus.

Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and translate insights into actionable content strategies.

Strong project management skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Advanced skills in strategic planning, content structuring, and project management.

Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, capable of working with teams across different departments and levels of the organization.

Ability to stay ahead of digital trends and adapt strategies to ensure SHRM’s content remains relevant and impactful.

A proactive approach to problem-solving and a keen interest in continuous learning and adapting to new technologies.

Additional NotesPhysical Requirements

Capable of performing essential duties with reasonable accommodations.

Work is primarily conducted in a professional office setting, utilizing standard office equipment.

#LI-HybridThe hiring range for this position is $170,000 to $185,000 per year. This range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on the candidate's experience, skills, and qualifications. SHRM offers a competitive and comprehensive total rewards package.
