Controls HVAC Field Technician
Job Summary:
To install, troubleshoot, and assist in the commissioning of Energy Management
Systems in a commercial environment with the assistance of a Field Apprentice. Also teach
Apprentices and Field Technician I and II’s.
Reports to: Controls Manager / Project Manager / Senior Building Automation Specialist
Status: Non-Exempt
Location: Varies
Essential Functions:
Read and understand construction MEP drawings and specifications.
Read and understand control drawings.
Read and understand electrical line diagrams.
Assist and teach all technicians and apprentices in all categories.
Run low voltage and network wire in new construction and retrofit (Occupied Space).
Wire and troubleshoot all mechanical and HVAC equipment corresponding with our control
system (plants, AHUs, chillers, generators, etc.).
Communicate with manufacturers to get units working if needed.
Commission control systems with Application Engineer/commission technician.
Wire and troubleshoot high voltage issues.
Troubleshoot control systems issues.
Wire and troubleshoot lighting control.
Capability of successfully running any size job.
Retrofit complicated control panels, while leaving plant and equipment online.
Install, program, setup, and troubleshoot variable speed drives.
Oversee and work on multiple jobs at a time, potentially working with internal controls or
subcontractors.
Logon to installed systems with web browser or RC-Studio.
Troubleshoot networking issues.
Layout job flow with Project Manager, Application Engineer, and management team to assure
a clean predictable job. Attend and interact during weekly progress meetings, if needed or as
required by the Project Manager or the properties staff.
Direct and supervise helpers, apprentices, technicians 1 and 2’s in assisting with a job.
Manage assigned work to meet professional execution of time and client satisfaction.
Maintain a record of open items/punch list for assigned jobs and report problems or changes
to project management immediately.
Clearly communicate job status to client and management.
Understand and adhere to company standards for work (how wire is run, how it is supported,
how box penetrations are made, etc.).
Adhere to company and client safety standards. Provide safety awareness on work sites.

Interface with other trades and GCs on work sites in an ethical and professional manner.
Competencies:
Strong working knowledge of basic BAS control components (AI, UI, DO, DI, Relays, Triacs, etc.).
Strong working knowledge and adherence of NEC (National Electric Code).
Strong working knowledge of mechanical systems sequence – ability to work with
clients and Application Engineers to develop proper sequence for systems.
Strong working knowledge of refrigerant cycle – how various pieces of equipment operate
to aid in troubleshooting and conflict resolution.
Working knowledge of networking – ability to setup and troubleshoot routers.
Qualifications:
Must provide basic hand tools for work and understand proper use.
Must have basic PC skills.
Must be able to pass a background check.
Must have a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work: The team member must be available to work various shifts,
Monday through Friday, totaling 40 hours each week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be
required as job duties demand. This position is also required to work the on-call services when
scheduled.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the team member is frequently exposed to
fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The team member is occasionally
exposed to extreme conditions both outside and inside.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to
talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping,
crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Ability to lift
75 lbs. several times a day.
Preferred Education and Experience:
High School Degree or equivalent necessary.
Appropriate Journey’s or Master’s License.
