Department Description:
The Visitor Programs and Services Department provides fee-based interpretive programs and other services to visitors in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Position Overview:
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is seeking a temporary Tour Assistant for the Alcatraz Night Tour and Alcatraz Behind the Scenes tour from now through November 8, 2025.
This is a temporary, 40 hour/week position with benefits.
This position is an excellent pathway for openings within the Alcatraz Night Tour as an Historical Interpreter and as a starting point for a National Park Service career.
The workweek is Tuesday-Saturday, 2:10-9:45 pm and includes any holidays that fall within the schedule. Any required holiday work is paid at double time.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Welcome guests arriving on Alcatraz for the Behind the Scenes Tour and the Night Tour
Accompany guests and tour guide on 1.5-2 hour Behind the Scenes Tour, ensuring visitor safety and comfort and protection of Island’s natural and cultural resources.
Answer visitor questions about tour experience and Island history.
Deliver live boat narrations about Alcatraz history for visitors coming to the Night Tour
Deliver cell door demonstrations and/or short programs about Island history when sufficiently knowledgeable (training and coaching provided)
Assist National Park Service and visitors in medical/emergency situations (no medical training necessary)
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent customer service skills
Good public speaking skills
Genuine desire to work daily with large numbers of park visitors from all around the world.
Willingness to work flexibility and cooperatively as part of a team.
Demonstrated history of excellent attendance record at past jobs
Willingness to wear a Parks Conservancy uniform.
Education and/or Experience:
Minimum of high school diploma required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Walking up and down the equivalent of a 13-story building several times per shift
Standing and walking for extended periods of time, particularly while assisting the 1.5-2 hour Behind the Scenes Tour
Being outdoors frequently in all weather conditions and indoors in non-centrally heated buildings (warm waterproof uniform clothing provided)
Extensive talking: interacting with visitors while providing information, answering questions, and potentially giving short history talks.
Taking a 15-minute ferry ride each way in all weather conditions.
