Job Summary:
The Steel Fabrication Shop Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the shop and ensuring that production goals, quality standards, and safety protocols are consistently met. With a strong background in lean manufacturing principles, the Shop Supervisor will optimize workflows, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency. The ideal candidate will also have the technical knowledge to read blueprints, interpret specifications, and guide the team through metal finishing processes to produce high-quality steel products.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervision & Leadership
Lead and manage a team of fabricators, welders, and shop personnel, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure efficient and high-quality production.
Monitor daily work schedules and production goals, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
Foster a positive and productive work environment, encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
Lean Manufacturing & Process Optimization
Implement lean manufacturing principles to reduce waste, increase efficiency, and streamline shop processes.
Analyze production workflows and identify areas for improvement, recommending and implementing solutions to increase throughput.
Continuously assess and refine shop processes to ensure maximum utilization of resources and minimize downtime.
Blueprint & Specifications Interpretation
Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to ensure the fabrication meets customer requirements.
Communicate complex design details to team members, ensuring accurate and precise execution during fabrication.
Provide feedback and support in the review of designs to improve manufacturability or address any potential issues.
Metal Fabrication & Finishing Oversight
Oversee all stages of metal fabrication, including cutting, welding, bending, and finishing processes, ensuring the final products meet all quality and design specifications.
Ensure proper finishing processes for steel, including sandblasting, painting, coating, and other surface treatments.
Ensure equipment and tools are correctly maintained and safety protocolsare followed throughout the fabrication and finishing stages.
Quality Control
Ensure all fabricated steel products meet quality standards and client specifications by conducting inspections and coordinating testing.
Troubleshoot and resolve fabrication issues, ensuring rework and corrections are minimal.
Implement and enforce quality control procedures to guarantee consistent production of high-quality materials and products.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, maintaining a safe working environment for all team members.
Conduct regular safety audits and safety training to minimize workplace accidents and injuries.
Enforce the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with engineering, production planning, and other departments to ensure a smooth flow of information and efficient production.
Provide feedback and reports on production progress, inventory, and workforce performance to management.
Communicate any delays, material shortages, or production challenges to management and develop solutions with the team.
Qualifications:
Proven experience (5+ years) in steel fabrication, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
Strong knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and a demonstrated ability to implement them in a fabrication environment.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
In-depth understanding of metal fabrication processes, including cutting, welding, and metal finishing techniques.
Experience with various metal finishing processes, such as sandblasting, powder coating, painting, and galvanizing.
Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality control.
Familiarity with shop equipment and tools and a solid understanding of their proper maintenance and usage.
Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in a manufacturing environment.
