Job Title: Material Handler Lead

Reports To: Production Manager
Job Summary:
The Material Handler Lead oversees the efficient movement, staging, and organization of materials within the steel fabrication facility. This role is critical in ensuring that the correct materials are staged in the right locations at the right time to meet production needs. The Material Handler Lead will lead a team, manage the flow of materials, and maintain accurate inventory levels to avoid delays or shortages in the production process.
Key Responsibilities:
Material Staging & Movement
Proactively ensure materials are staged near production areas, precisely when needed, and in the correct quantities to avoid delays in fabrication processes.
Work closely with production supervisors to understand material needs and timing, ensuring a just-in-time inventory system.
Oversee and manage the material handling team to ensure efficient movement of materials from the warehouse to the production floor.
Inventory Management
Maintain accurate records of received, staged, and used materials to support real-time inventory tracking.
Ensure materials are handled with care to prevent damage and ensure quality control.
Implement strategies to avoid over-staging or under-staging materials, aligning inventory with production schedules.
Team Leadership
Lead and mentor a team of material handlers, providing guidance on best practices for material handling and safety.
Assign daily tasks, monitor performance, and ensure materials are being moved efficiently to the correct areas.
Train new material handlers on processes, safety procedures, and proper equipment usage.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure all material handling operations adhere to safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
Conduct regular safety checks on equipment, ensuring it is properly maintained and safe for use.
Promote a culture of safety and accountability within the material handling team.
Process Improvement
Identify opportunities for process improvement to enhance material handling efficiency and reduce downtime.
Collaborate with the operations team to streamline workflows and ensure materials are delivered to the production floor in optimal quantities, at the right time, and without unnecessary delays.
Communication & Reporting
Maintain clear communication with production and warehouse teams to ensure smooth operations and timely material delivery.
Prepare and submit regular reports on material status, inventory, and team performance.
Qualifications:
Lean manufacturing experience preferred
5S Training and Knowledge
Proven experience (3+ years) in steel material handling, with at least 1 year in a leadership role within a manufacturing or fabrication environment, preferably in the steel or metal industry.
Strong knowledge of material handling techniques, warehouse operations, and inventory management systems.
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize material handling needs based on production schedules.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to ensure materials are staged in the right quantities and locations.
Forklift certification and experience with heavy machinery are required.
Ability to lift and move heavy materials safely.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, occasionally in hot or noisy conditions.
Prolonged standing, walking, and bending as required.
